Description:

Astyanax was a normal high schooler before he was summoned to the world of Remlia. He is told that he must rescue Princess Rosebud from the nasty wizard Blackhorn. This adventure for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) is truly impressive! Astyanax is a side-scrolling platformer with action elements. You can use Astyanax's axe to do away with enemies. There is a bar at the bottom of the screen that determines how much damage your attacks will deal. The more time between your attacks, the more damage you will dish out. As you play you will collect weapons upgrades, which are essential in later stages. This NES platformer is an intense adventure that you don't want to miss!

3It's one of those gamesJun 12, 2001

where, if you know the cheat codes or have a game genie, it can be a great lot of fun, but if not, you'd best be a kung fu master or eight year old child to have the speed and dexterity required to make it past the third map.

NES - Astyanax
Three Stars - Nothing specatular, but a somewhat decent title

"Astyanax" is a side scroller staring a protagonist who must save the princess (sound familiar?). This is yet another NES port of an arcade title. There are numerous differences between the original arcade title and the NES port.

Known as "The Lord of King" in Japan and "The Astyanax" in the arcades, the NES port, simply titled "Astyanax", stars a 16 year old high-school student from Greenview High who is named after the mythological figure Astyanax. His parents must have had a thing for Greek mythology, though I think it would be brutal to go through high school with a name like that.

Astyanax dreams ever night of a princess calling for help. A pixie named Cutie summons him to the realm of Remlia where he must give battle with a giant golden axe. The axe has a power meter. If you swing the axe multiple times very quickly it will deplete the power meter. However, if you allow the axe to recharge between swings then the axe will be more powerful when you use it. The sprites are very large for an NES title, which creates the NES's famous flicking problem and some questionable hit detection. The axe mechanic does add some stragety that would not otherwise be there.

The game features three weapons: axe, spear and sword. There are also three magic spells: fire, bind (pause time), and thunder. The game play is rather sluggish and not nearly as fast paced as you would think for an action adventure ame.

The game has an invincibility code, wherein the only way to die is to fall down a pit. Given the amount of cheap deaths you'll get, you may want to leave the code on.

The video game website IGN rated this title as the 97th greatest game on their top 100 NES games of all time.
