2SKIP THIS AND PICKUP ETERNAL CHAMPIONS FOR SEGA CDApr 30, 2003
By Ted
This game falls short with so many other console fighting games. It has cool characters and stages, moves but not enough of these aspects to make the game shine. Thats exactly why I highly recommend the Sega CD game Eternal Champions:Challenge From The Darkside it has all the characters, moves, overkills that this 16 bit cart does and a whole lot more. In the Sega CD sequel the player has 4 brillant ways to end a match not just the one you get with the genesis game. The Sega CD version has overkills which is in this game ,but in addition has cinekills(a cinema scene where you brutally dispose of the opponent)Vendettas(where each character has a unique way to let out his/her revenge),and Sudden Deaths(another background finisher like overkills except they are harder to pull off and ends the round quicker)and tons of characters I believe 38-40 with not palette swaps like the ... Mortal Kombat series. BOTTOM LINE I GIVE ETERNAL CHAMPIONS CREDIT FOR BEING MADE TO SPAWN THE WONDERFUL SEGA CD GAME,WHICH I WOULD RECOMEND OVER THIS ANY DAY!

3decent fighting gameApr 12, 2000

Eternal Champions is a decent fighting game with original characters. The graphics, sound, control, and fun factor are average, but not the worst I've ever heard or seen. Eternal Champions was one of the first fighting games I played for the Sega Genesis and I liked it for awhile until I played it a lot, then it just got old. The characters are like no others you'll see in any fighting game and have some cool moves. There are lightning fast moves and even some strange ones such as a wizard that throws snakes at you. All in all, it's a decent fighting game and at least deserves a rent.

2Mediocre but originalJan 15, 2000

This is one of the later Genesis fighters from the era when Sega was trying to save its system from being outdated and outmoded. SOA managed to squeeze a mind-boggling amount of graphics out of the Genesis wiring, but in the gameplay areas Eternal Champions falls somewhat short.

For starts, there are eight characters in the game, each representing his time zone (prehistory, Roman times, beginning of the 17th century, end of the 19th, beginning of twenties, '70s, late 90's, 22 century and, finally, the twenty-fourth). Characters are well-detailed. Each is capable of unleashing (video-game buzzword) an array of "special attacks", surprisingly, all of which are fully described in the manual. Literally, the only thing which you don't know about the game is the way to perform "overkills", basically finishing blows that throw the opponent to be mutilated someplace in the background. In a word, this game has no replay value.

The backgrounds are colorful, but the pixels often cleave for no apparent reason. The musical score in all arenas is painfully similar, striking high, mosquito-like keys far too often.

The controls are easy to get used to, but are frequently looser than expected.

Overall, Eternal Champions is a less-than-average game which offers some challenge but nothing more. An almost sure avoid.

1Ridiculous GameJul 21, 2011
By Chaise W. Norfleet "Chaise Norfleet "Greatness""
This game is the worst fighting game ever. You have to press start to change from punch to kick, the players are original, but just damn dumb, and the game is hard. You will be lucky enough to even pass the first person. The graphics are ok, but it's horrendous mechanics destroys any hope for this game, and you can't even change your character if you loose, so that forces you to hit the reset button every time you want to change characters.
